Rotork has been working with BAE Systems to improve a series of A-range actuators to IQ3 actuators which function penstocks controlling motion of ships between the ocean and transitional locks and dry docks at Her Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth (HMNB Portsmouth).
A collection of A-range actuators had reached the tip of their operational life after long service in a difficult setting. BAE Systems needed to retain all the benefits of electrical actuators, so IQ3 actuators had been chosen. These had to be specially tailored by Rotork to overcome issues around confined spaces and troublesome access.
IQ3 actuators and IS gearboxes were mechanically tailored in order that both actuator and gearbox could presumably be manually operated with out entering the confined house. Rotork designed special hand auto levers and thru drive mechanisms for the actuator and gearbox to eliminate the need for confined house entry.
